Sierpinski (<1K) Symbol Font

    If the symbol font is installed correctly on your system you should see alpha and beta symbols here: a b.

    There are considerable problems concerning the symbol font under HTML. Early generations of browsers (lean, nonbloated ones like Netscape 3 and 4.5) supported the <FONT FACE="SYMBOL"> inclusion method depracated by some modern browsers such as Netscape 6 and Opera 6. Modern bloated browsers support the UNICODE method but HTML pages using UNICODE are incompatible with earlier browsers. Additionally, some vital mathematical symbols are not available via UNICODE.

Up arrow symbol
    Most modern browsers, notably MSIE 5+ , Firefox 1.0, and Deepnet Explorer display most of the symbol font but fail on the up arrow character 0xAD [­]   . An alternate less meaty up arrow character is available as uarr entity [↑] or unicode 0x2191 [↑] in modern browsers but this fails under old browsers. Putting unicode 2191 inside symbol font tag gives [↑] , a ? on MSIE5.
    I am currently moving over to use of uarr enitity for uparrow ↑ on this site so that Firefox or Deepnet may be used but some files may persist with symbol font uparrows in which case Netscape 4.5- should be used to view them.

Other symbols
    Some base font textual symbols like half [½] and times [×] display OK in NS4.5- and most MSIE but fail in Firefox. Using character entities insetad breaks NS4.5-, nonetheless I have started to switch to using them.
